Gournal: A Linux Alternative to Windows Journal

A few days ago, I wrote about Jarnal, an open source Java-based alternative to OneNote and Windows Journal. Today, I bring you Gournal, a note-taking Tablet program for Linux. This is a Tablet PC only program which makes it an alternative to Windows Journal because it is designed to use with a digital pen.

It doesn’t have handwriting recognition, but it can be used with xstroke, a gesture recognition program.

Gournal is written in Perl so it requires gtk2-perl, gladexml, and gnomecanvas, along with Linux of course.

I do not have Linux on my computer or have access to it, so I will not be able to give a full review. I will talk to AdminID and see if he can review it.

Using linux should only require something called a live boot cd, which boots linux straight from the CD. Ubuntu has one available.
Installing gournal should be a matter of :

    apt-get install gournal
    or
    aptitude install gournal
    .

Thanks Amnon. I might give it a try on my spare PC.
  • Yes, you can use linux on your PC without installing it - Just download the VMWare Player (virtual machine) and Play the image of (e.g.) the Ubuntu O/S. I did it in order to test how my website looks in Mac, which is exactly like it looks on Konkueror.

    Challanges:
    1. You will have to install Gournal - which I don't know how to do. I'm not a linux expert.
    2. Will this configuration support pen recognition? It remains to see.
